What is Diagnostics Data about?

Diagnostics. Simplified! Digitalization does away with complexity. This is particularly noticeable when diagnosing vehicle troubles: State-of-the-art diagnostic tools working with original OEM data provide clear, reliable and current translations of diagnostic trouble codes.

Our data product “Diagnostics Data” contains DTC descriptions for 8 brands of the Volkswagen Group, straight from the corresponding Volkswagen Group R&D departments. It enables tool manufacturers to further develop their diagnostic solutions.

Diagnostics Data:

  • increases the data quality of OBD tools significantly
  • almost eliminates the need for manual research and reverse engineering
  • serves compliance with current safety standards
  • is updated twice a year to cover both technical updates and newest vehicles

What data or features do I have access to?

With Diagnostics Data you get access to up-to-date DTC translations for Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Skoda, SEAT, CUPRA, Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley.

Every single data set contains error code, error description and reference values.

Models are consolidated based on their platform. Currently all 70 platforms made in and for the EU are covered in the data package. If you need a worldwide data package (75 platforms), please contact us

The whole package is updated twice a year to ensure that the data and your diagnostic devices are always up to date.

Until further notice the data is being delivered via ZIP-file download including the latest vehicles and technical updates. If you are already a customer, please click on API documentation and download to start your download direct from there.

In the data package every control unit is included in the format of an individual .odx file containing all potential control unit error codes, including their translation.

Limitations may apply.

Security Keys

Part of the package is a second agreement with Volkswagen AG regarding the necessary encryption keys.

Supported Brands and Models

The data set supports vehicle models across the whole product range from Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Skoda, SEAT, CUPRA, Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley, depending on their platform.

Limitations may apply.

Supported Markets

Currently, Diagnostics Data can be requested by diagnostic tool manufacturers that have a legal entity in the European Union. If your company is based outside the EU, please contact us.

FAQs

Diagnostics Data currently covers eight brands of the Volkswagen Group: Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, Škoda, SEAT, Cupra, Bentley, and Lamborghini. The data set includes all 70 platforms approved for the European market. New model series, including electric vehicles such as the ID. Buzz, are integrated regularly.

Diagnostics Data includes OEM-certified information for professional vehicle diagnostics:

  • Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), e.g., P0123
  • Plain-text error descriptions
  • Reference values, e.g., target temperatures, voltage ranges

This content supports reliable evaluation of control unit data – enabling more accurate diagnoses and more efficient repair processes.

The EU package includes 70 platforms approved for the European market. For international use cases, a worldwide package with 75 platforms is available – this includes additional models for markets outside the EU.

Diagnostics Data is updated twice a year – in May and November. Each release adds new vehicle models, ECUs, and diagnostic codes. The update frequency is significantly higher than with many third-party solutions.

All content originates directly from the development departments of the respective Volkswagen Group brands and complies with the official OEM quality standards.

Yes. Usage is compliant with the Block Exemption Regulation (EU) 2018/858. The purpose is to ensure equal repair opportunities for independent workshops – with legally secure access to OEM data. Use is possible for eligible customers based in the European Economic Area (EEA) or CH or UK.

The data is anonymous, therefore the GDPR does not apply. The entire data delivery process is subject to strict IT security requirements.

No.

The data may be used by authorized customers in their own products, tools and applications in compliance with the Block Exemption Regulation (EU) 2018/858. Any further use and remarketing is not permitted.

Compared to third-party solutions, OEM data from GIS offers superior data quality, Block Exemption Regulation (EU) 461/2010 compliance, legal certainty, no outdated or incorrect error codes, and a consistent data structure across the covered Volkswagen Group brands. This results in greater planning reliability for tool manufacturers and improved efficiency in workshops thanks to reliable diagnostics.

Yes. Diagnostics Data can be combined with other GIS products – such as VIN Specification, Vehicle Identity, VIN Recall, or Repair & Maintenance Information. This enables end-to-end digital processes in workshop and claims assessment applications – from vehicle identification to the exact repair measure.

Diagnostics Data is intended for commercial providers in the vehicle diagnostics and service market, especially:

  • Manufacturers of OBD and diagnostic tools
  • Software companies focused on workshop, service or fleet solutions
  • Providers of technical vehicle data platforms

Only companies with headquarters in the European Economic Area (EEA) or CH or UK that meet the required IT standards SFD agreement are eligible to use the product.

The following requirements apply for access to Diagnostics Data:

  • Company headquarters in the European Economic Area (EEA) or CH or UK
  • SFD agreement (vehicle diagnostics protection)

These requirements ensure secure data exchange.

The package also includes a second agreement with Volkswagen AG regarding the necessary encryption codes.

SFD stands for "Protection of Vehicle Diagnostics" (German: Schutz der Fahrzeugdiagnose). It is a security concept developed by the Volkswagen Group to prevent unauthorized access to safety-relevant diagnostic and coding functions. For applications that go beyond simply reading trouble codes and require access to specific ECU functions – such as resetting or adapting components – a valid SFD authorization is needed.

This requires signing an SFD agreement. The agreement is free of charge, but only available in combination with a licensed diagnostic product such as Diagnostics Data. A standalone SFD contract is not possible.

The current agreement covers control units in over 95% of all vehicles and functions. Only the models ID.7, ID. Buzz, Tayron, Tiguan and T-Cross from model year 2025 onwards are already subject to the new SFD2 security standard, which will be included in the SFD agreement starting in 2026.

The data is provided in ODX format (Open Diagnostic eXchange) – an open, cross-manufacturer standard for diagnostic data. Each ECU is delivered as a separate file via static download.

Data is accessed via the GIS Data Hub – as a ZIP file for download (no push/pull). Thanks to the ODX standard, the data can be integrated into existing diagnostic tools or backend solutions. An API for automated access is currently under development. Support and best practice documentation is provided individually as part of the onboarding process.

Currently, data is only available via download from the Data Hub.

Updates are provided twice a year via the Data Hub. Thanks to the standardized ODX format, updated data can be seamlessly integrated into existing systems. The structured file logic ensures consistent compatibility across vehicle models. As our partner, you will be informed as soon as a new update is available.

Onboarding is individually supported by the GIS team. You will be assigned a dedicated contact person, receive technical assistance, support via email or phone, and – upon request – documentation for the integration process.

A dedicated contact person accompanies the entire onboarding process and provides support for technical questions ('Single Point of Contact'). Training materials and individual consulting are part of the service. Agreed response times (SLAs) can be arranged individually.

Demos or technical test access are available upon request during the sales process.
