Mileage Data

A regular update on the current mileage in the vehicle allows insurance companies to offer their customers optimised and customer-centric insurance rates.

What is Mileage Data about?

Mileage Data provides regular updates on the actual kilometres driven by the insured vehicle. Thus, the monthly or annual mileage may be determined automatically. This enables insurance companies to offer customised monthly or annual billing.

Insurance tariffs and rates are based, among other things, on kilometres driven. The information provided when the contract is concluded is usually based on estimates - and so is the billing. If the estimate is too high, the policyholder pays too much. If it is too low, the policyholder is faced with unpleasant enquiries and additional payments.

Both mean unnecessary administrative work for the insurer as well as inconvenience and potentially negative experience for the customer. The system is also susceptible to fraud.

With access to the actual mileage driven, these negative effects may be avoided. Neither the policyholder, nor the insurer, need to guess or estimate. The Payment is based on the actual kilometres driven. Fair and customer-centred. This is much more efficient for the insurer – and increases customer satisfaction.

FAQ for insurance companies and software providers

Mileage Data currently covers Volkswagen Passenger Cars with MOD 2–4 infotainment systems, and an active We Connect license including the “Vehicle Status” service. This generally applies to model years from 2016 onwards. A detailed model overview can be found in the Supported brands and models section on this page.

Mileage Data provides VIN-specific information consisting of:

  • Actual mileage (odometer reading)
  • Time stamp of the reading
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

No driving behavior or location data is included.

Mileage Data delivers the latest available odometer reading at the time of the query. The connected vehicles always attempt to transmit the current mileage and timestamp to the covered backend systems whenever they are switched on or off.

The data originates directly from the vehicle. It is VIN-specific and cannot be manipulated by the policyholder. This ensures precise, fraud-resistant information for insurance use cases.

Yes. The legal basis is a combination of contract performance (insurance contract with the policyholder) and legitimate interest (Balance of Interest) under the GDPR. Volkswagen Group Info Services, the Volkswagen brand, and the authorized Insurance Company each act as independent data controllers under the GDPR. Possible intermediaries act as processors. Usage is limited to the contractually defined  purposes.

Data transfer takes place exclusively between authorized business partners and via secured interfaces. Volkswagen Group Info Services does not store the odometer reading itself, but only the necessary metadata for compliance and documentation purposes. To ensure full compliance with applicable Data Protection regulations, Volkswagen Group Info Services implements comprehensive technical and organizational measures in contracts and internal processes. Furthermore, Volkswagen Group Info Services requires all business partners to adhere to state-of-the-art IT security standards and to  follow Volkswagen Group security policies and best practices. This ensures that data is handled responsibly, securely, and in line with the highest industry standards.

No.

The data may only be used by authorized customers for the defined use case of usage-based insurance tariffs. Any further use or remarketing is not permitted.

Mileage Data is sourced directly from the insured vehicle, ensuring precision, fraud resistance, and contractual compliance. Unlike many third-party telematics solutions, no additional hardware (dongle) is required. The product provides real-time, VIN-specific odometer readings with high legal certainty and simple API integration.

Yes. Mileage Data can be combined with other data products that are legally approved for use by insurance companies.

Mileage Data is intended for insurance companies and digital insurance providers. Only authorized B2B customers with headquarters in the European Economic Area (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), or United Kingdom or Switzerland are eligible. Use by private individuals is excluded.

The use of the data is governed by strict technical and legal requirements to ensure GDPR compliance and the responsible handling of personal data. Key principles include:

  • Business Scope: Access is strictly limited to B2B customers.
  • Geographical Restriction: Data processing is confined to the European Economic Area (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), United Kingdom and Switzerland.
  • Purpose Limitation: Data may only be used for Insurance and Risk Solutions.
  • Legal Basis: Processing requires a valid GDPR legal basis, specifically the performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
  • Verification & Safeguards: Comprehensive verification processes are embedded in our contracts and operations to ensure compliance with data protection laws and adherence to the highest IT security standards.

This overview highlights the core requirements but does not represent an exhaustive list. Additional technical and legal obligations may apply as set out in the detailed framework and contractual agreements.

The data is provided via REST API from the Volkswagen Group Info Services Data Hub. Each query returns the most recent odometer reading with a timestamp for the specified VIN. The data is made available in JSON format via an API interface that supports per-VIN data transfer using a PULL mechanism.

Authorized business partners can access the data via API through our Data Hub. The latest odometer reading is delivered instantly. Integration into existing backend systems is straightforward. Support and documentation are provided during onboarding.

Yes. Data access is exclusively available via API (pull). No separate hardware is required.

Onboarding is individually supported by the Volkswagen Group Info Services team. You will be assigned a dedicated contact person, receive technical assistance, support via email or phone, and – upon request – documentation for the integration process.

A dedicated contact person supports the entire onboarding process and provides assistance with technical questions ('Single Point of Contact'). Training materials and individual consultation are part of the service. Response times (SLAs) can be agreed individually.

A dedicated sandbox is not available. Test data sets can be provided upon request during the sales process. After contract signature, Volkswagen Group Info Services grants a four (4) week test period. During the test period, the data cannot be used for commercial purposes, but only for test purposes including, in particular:

  • Functional test of the API,
  • Content tests,
  • Performance tests after prior agreement with Volkswagen Group Info Services regarding the time window and execution.
